Item configuration lets customers tailor an item before adding it to their cart. Use variations when a choice can change the item’s price or configuration. Use required option groups when a customer must make a choice. Use optional extras when customers can add non-required items or upgrades.

For the item’s main details, see Create and Manage Items.

Choose the right configuration

A variation is a configurable item choice structure. It can change the item’s price where configured, so it is suitable when an item has choices with different prices. MENO supports variation-based pricing alongside a single item price, sale pricing, and outlet or menu custom pricing where configured.

A required option group is a choice that the customer must resolve before they can add the item to their cart. For example, a required group may ask the customer to choose a size, sauce, or color. A required choice can also affect the price where it is configured.

An optional extra, also called an add-on, is a non-required choice. Customers can select it if they want it, or continue without it. If an optional extra has a price, that configured price is added to the item price. An item can have multiple optional groups.

Configure variations for price-changing choices

Use variation-based pricing when the available version of an item determines its price. The variation is part of the item’s configuration rather than a separate item price alone.

When reviewing the configuration, make sure the price effect of each variation is set as intended. Customers see the item’s configuration during the item-detail flow, where they can view the item’s price or sale price and make required choices before adding it to the cart.

Variations are managed as reusable catalog structures. This helps you use configurable ordering structures with the items that need them.

Set required option groups

Add a required option group when the order cannot proceed without a customer decision. Required groups are appropriate for choices such as size, sauce, color, or another essential preference.

Required choices and optional extras have different customer-facing behavior. A customer cannot add an item until every required option group is resolved. If the required choice has a configured price effect, it can change the item’s price.

Use required groups only for decisions that are truly necessary. This keeps the item-detail experience clear and makes the required selection meaningful.

Add optional extras and add-ons

Add optional extras for choices that customers may want but do not need to make. Paid extras add their configured price to the item when selected. Because an item can have multiple optional groups, you can keep different types of extras organized separately.

Add-ons are also managed as reusable catalog structures. Use them to create a configurable ordering experience without making the choice mandatory.

Check the customer experience

On the customer-facing item-detail screen, customers can see the item description, price or sale price, required option groups, optional extras, special requests where enabled, and quantity. They must complete required selections before using the add-to-cart action. Optional extras remain optional, and selected paid extras contribute their configured price.

After an item is added, configured cart entries show the selected options and add-ons. If a customer edits a configured item, MENO reopens its configuration interface so they can review or change their selections.
