Categories organise items into clear sections for customers browsing a MENO menu or shop. They are part of the shared workspace catalog and can be used to group related items, such as Drinks, Main Courses, or New Arrivals.

Create or update a category

Open Catalog → Categories in the MENO dashboard to work with your categories. Give each category a clear name that customers will recognise when browsing your menu. Category names are shown to customers, so use labels that describe the items in the section rather than internal notes or codes.

A category can also have an image. Add an image when it helps distinguish the section visually. In the customer-facing menu, a category with an image is displayed as an image separator or header before that category’s items. If the category has no image, MENO shows the category name without a category image.

Assign items to categories

Categories are assigned from the item’s configuration. When you create or edit an item, assign it to the category or categories that describe where customers should find it.

An item can belong to more than one category. For example, an item that fits both Breakfast and Popular can be assigned to both. Customers will see that item under each relevant category. This helps the same item remain discoverable in more than one browsing section without limiting it to a single category.

Items that are not assigned to a category can appear under an Other grouping where applicable. Assign items deliberately if you want them to appear in a named section rather than relying on that grouping.

How categories appear to customers

On the customer-facing menu, category names are available as selectable category chips. Selecting a category chip automatically scrolls the menu to that category. The active chip uses your MENO merchant primary branding color.

Categories can also be used for navigation or filtering in menus. The category image and name determine how the section is introduced in the menu:

  • Category with an image: The image appears as a separator or header before the items in that category.
  • Category without an image: Only the category name appears before its items.

Use concise, distinct category names and apply categories consistently across related items. This makes category chips easier to scan and helps customers move directly to the section they need.
