Reusable add-ons let you offer optional extras on items throughout your catalog. In MENO, add-ons and variations are managed as reusable catalog structures and are used by items to create configurable ordering experiences.

Use add-ons for choices that a customer may select but does not have to select. For example, an extra can be available on an item without preventing the customer from adding that item without it.

Use add-ons as optional extras

An add-on is an optional extra, not a required choice. Customers may select an optional extra when configuring an item, or leave it unselected.

If an extra has a configured price and the customer selects it, that price is added to the item. An item can also have multiple optional groups, so you can offer more than one set of optional extras where appropriate.

This differs from a required option group. A required option group must be resolved before the customer can add the item to their cart. Do not use an optional add-on when the customer must make a selection, and do not treat required groups and optional extras as the same customer experience.

Reuse add-ons on relevant items

Create and maintain add-ons as reusable structures, then use them on the items that need those optional choices. Because they are catalog structures, add-ons support a consistent configuration experience across the items that use them.

When deciding where to use an add-on, consider whether the choice is genuinely optional for that item. Add-ons should supplement an item rather than replace its base configuration. If the item needs the customer to make a mandatory choice, use a required option group instead.

What customers see

When an item has configuration to choose from, selecting its add control opens the configuration sheet. Customers can select required choices and any optional extras, then confirm Add.

On the item page, optional extras can appear with the item’s other configuration. In the cart, configured entries show the selected options and add-ons. If a customer edits a configured item, MENO reopens its configuration UI so the selection can be reviewed or changed.

An item without required configuration, variation, or add-on choices is added to the cart immediately when the customer selects its add control. Adding optional extras changes that experience by giving customers a configuration step before they confirm the item.

Remember the shared-catalog scope

The catalog is primarily shared across the workspace. Outlets consume and customize the catalog through menus, availability, and supported outlet-specific pricing. Keep this shared scope in mind when you manage reusable add-ons: a catalog structure can affect the items and outlets that use it.

If you give an Outlet Manager permission to manage categories, items, add-ons, variations, and tags, that manager can manage shared catalog entities. Even when the manager is assigned to limited outlets, changes to shared catalog structures can affect data used by other outlets. Treat this permission as sensitive and grant it only when that level of catalog access is appropriate.
